Personal firewalls

We recommend that you use a personal firewall on your PC, especially if your computer is located in the Halls and Colleges.

The Windows XP SP2 builtin firewall protects your computer from the multiple probes from other infected computers on the network, but it does not filter outgoing traffic.

ZoneAlarm is a free Windows firewall from http://www.zonelabs.com It is harder to configure, but allows you to specify what programs are allowed to access the Internet and which ones are not. If your computer gets infected with a virus and the malicious code tries to contact an IRC server for instance, ZoneAlarm will alert you to this.
Unfortunately, the newest version of ZoneAlarm, v6.0.667.000 has the problem that it logs every packet that it receives and in the process generates a huge number of nameserver lookups. Please use an older version, v5.5.094 for instance.
